Start-up Steps of Diesel Generator Set

A diesel generator set, also known as a diesel genset, is a type of generator that uses a diesel engine to produce electricity. Because of their durability, efficiency, and ability to provide a steady supply of electricity over a long period of time, diesel gensets are commonly used as a backup power source in the event of a power outage or as a primary source of power in off-grid areas where there is no reliable supply of electricity.

When starting a diesel generator set, using incorrect startup procedures can have various negative impacts, such as engine damage, poor performance, safety hazards, unreliable power supply and resulting increased maintenance costs.

In order to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the diesel generator set, during the startup process, AGG recommends that users always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines and specific instructions provided in the generator set's operating manual. The following are some general start-up steps for diesel generator sets for reference:

Pre-Start Checks

1.Check the fuel level and ensure there is an adequate supply.

2.Inspect the engine oil level and make sure it's within the recommended range.

3.Check the coolant level and ensure it's sufficient for operation.

4.Inspect the battery connections and make sure they are secure and corrosion-free.

5.Check the air intake and exhaust systems for obstructions.

Switch to Manual Mode: Before starting, make sure the generator is in manual operation mode.

Prime the System: If the diesel generator set has a priming pump, prime the fuel system to remove any air.

Turn On the Battery: Turn on the battery switch or connect the external starting batteries.

Start the Engine: Engage the starter motor or push the start button to crank the engine.

Monitor the Start-Up: Observe the engine during startup to ensure it runs smoothly and check for any unusual sounds or vibrations.

Switch to Auto Mode: After the engine is started and stabilized, switch the generator set to auto mode to supply power automatically.

Monitor Parameters: Monitor the generator set's voltage, frequency, current, and other parameters to make sure they are within the normal range.

Warm Up the Engine: Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before loading any loads.

Connect the Load: Gradually connect electrical loads to the generator set to avoid sudden surges.

Monitoring and Maintenance: Continuously monitor the status of the generator set while it is running to quickly find out and resolve any alarms or issues that may arise.

Shutdown Procedure: When the generator set is not needed, follow the correct shutdown procedures to ensure the safety and preservation of the equipment.
